2. What are your club's main goals and aims?
Women in STEM UniSA aims to support women entering fields that have been considered 'non-traditional' for females for a long time - science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. We do this by giving our members opportunities to establish professional networks and gain insight into industries including but not limited to Aviation, Biochemistry, Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, Psychology, and Statistics. Our main goal is to use our club to promote an inclusive culture through community involvement.
3. What have been some of your clubs biggest achievements?
Receiving recognition at the USASA Club Awards has been a great achievement for us. We received the 'Break the Internet' award for our social media management as well as 'Event of the Year' for our online networking event. We are particularly proud of being awarded the 'People's Choice Award' for the second year in a row, as it means a lot to us to have our club executive peers recognise all the work and effort we put into being active at UniSA. Regardless, our biggest achievement still is and always will be creating a community where everyone is accepted, supported, and given opportunities to further themselves.
4. What is your club looking forward to this year?
We are incredibly excited to be holding our first ever cocktail night! EY have kindly let us use their rooftop balcony which has an incredible view of Adelaide. This event is going to be a great way to celebrate the end of another year with food, drinks and socialising with fellow Women in STEM members.
5. How can students get involved in your club?
Anyone is welcome to attend any of our events - you can find details of upcoming events by following any of our social media pages. However, the best way to get involved is to sign up on our USASA page. Event details get delivered right into your inbox, as well as exclusive oppotunities and giveaways. We are also looking for people to join our club executive team, so if you've ever been interested in being a part of running a club, send us an email at USASA-STEM.women@usasa.unisa.edu.au and we can provide you with more information.
6. What's the best thing about your club?
Being a member means being a part of an inclusive community that allows those in the minority of STEM fields to come together. Exclusive opportunities in networking and workshops. Finding support with other students who share our unique position. The warm community you become apart of! We learn from each other so much and that truly is a source of empowerment!
7. If you had no limits on budget or space what would be your dream club event?
It would be a STEM Ball. A lot of the degrees in STEM are quite niche and have smaller cohorts, so a lot of us don't get things like Business Ball and Law Ball. Having a massive party with all of the STEM students would be great.
8. Is there anything else you would like to share that your club has to offer?
We are always looking for new and exciting ways to engage with our members so you'll have to sign up to find out. One particular initiative we've really enjoyed is mailing out care packages to our members. Exam time can be pretty awful, and so during that period we package and send off small freebies and activities our members can do to take their mind off study for a bit.
