Mount Gambier
Bachelor of Primary Education (Honours)
I am studying a Bachelor of Primary Education, Honours. My expected completion year is 2028.
When I came to my regional campus I was a very anxious person who didn't know what to expect. After just a day on campus I became very familiar and immersed in the warm and welcoming environment. This made me eager to get to know more people outside of my degree, on my campus, or on the city campuses. This eagerness was however restricted as I was never aware of many events on my campus and their popularity. When I was given the offer to participate in the graduation day panel, I took this opportunity to share my strive for meeting new people and expanding my university experience. This is when I was made more aware of USASA and the Mount Gambier role through the great encouragement of university staff. This gave me much excitement and ideas towards how I can make others on regional campuses more aware of the association and create a joyful experience for all.
I strive to bring more resources and students into a regional campus. Make known and grow the great communities that regional areas have to offer and to their best potential. I strive to expand the experiences of my peers and create many opportunities to grow, have fun, and make lifelong friends. I want to advocate for mental health on campuses as it is a topic very close to me. The most important thing for me is ensuring that everyone has a friendly face and knows how to reach for support when they need.
I am from the Mount Gambier campus. The best thing about my campus is the comfortable study areas and spacious classrooms. The people and staff on the campus add to this making it a warm space.
If it ever becomes too much for you, take a second to breathe and recollect yourself. To get the most out of your experience you should feel like your best self. There is nothing wrong with reaching out for help no matter if it is from your friends, peers, university staff, or the many useful resources on campus and online.
Connecting with nature always puts me in a good mood. From a young age, with my family I have grown a love for nature through fishing, camping, walks on the beach, and my shack at the Coorong. When I am on my own or with my loved ones surrounded by the sounds of the ocean, birds, or circled around a fire is when I feel most myself.
If I could have dinner with anyone, it would be the teacher from my schooling years that made me see the real importance of an educator. This teacher made me realise that all values and goals close to my heart, I am able to pursue through the role of teaching, helping me to feel motivated towards a meaningful purpose in the future.
If money was no object I would travel the world. I would not only do this for the experience, but to provide an education to children and people in less fortunate situations.
Hi, my name is Dakota Caines, and I am one of the newest USASA board members. I will be filling out the role of Mount Gambier Student Representative for the remainder of the year. This month has been all about settling into this role by building a profile and goals, engaging in all meetings to learn about my responsibilities, the people I will be working with, and the amazing things that I will be able to accomplish.
Between staff and fellow students within the Mount Gambier campus there has been much conversation on what can be done to develop a uni culture. I am really excited to get to know all board members and be able to work for the needs and wants of students. Towards the beginning of a new study period, I am hoping to work towards becoming a recognisable and approachable face on campus and develop a survey for Mount Gambier students to gain ideas and inspiration for suggestions and activities on campus.
This month I will also be attending Mount Gambier’s last UniSA Open Day to get to know and help new students.
At the start of the month, attending and supporting open day was the perfect way to get my face out to other students and staff on campus. This month my biggest task has been working closely with USASA and my campus for a student survey I have recently sent out and reviewing these responses to put towards expanding the University experience of Mount Gambier on campus and regional online students. The depth of responses I received is more than I could have hoped for and I am so excited to execute these amazing ideas. It has been amazing having conversations with students on campus about what they think needs improvement and what they would like to see, many tutors and coordinators have also come to me with amazing ideas. It has been amazing getting to know staff on campus and USASA staff who I will be working with. At the end of this month, I will be helping out at campus rewind where we will say farewell to and celebrate our time at Uni SA. I am super excited to take this opportunity to meet more students on campus.
This month has been a great step in the right direction for myself and the Mount Gambier campus. The student engagement has been great with a flow of many students in classes or using the campus space for their study which is getting me super excited for what is currently being planned. This month has consisted of much planning for great things to come on campus which in the end will all be worth my time. Look out for some fun days on campus to socialise, take a break from study and grab some food. Along with planning events and managing my own study it was great to make it up to Adelaide and meet all my fellow board members and staff. I had such an amazing time getting to attend the Government House reception to say farewell Uni SA and represent all regional students.
